Public, Employees Turn Out for Surgical Robot Demo Event

Who knew opening a Starburst wrapper could be so fun?

During a June 25 demonstration event near the hospital check-in area, employees and members of the public alike got to complete a variety of fun tasks intended to demonstrate the capabilities of Intuitive’s da Vinci 5 robotic surgical device, from lifting objects to determine how heavy they were, to opening candy wrappers, to stretching and moving rubber bands over pegs.

Surgeons operate the robotic device from a remote console. They can view 10-time magnified, 3D images of surgery areas while using tools that respond to their wrist movements and provide force feedback.

The da Vinci 5 is increasingly being used in many forms of surgery. The smaller incisions the robot makes are a major benefit for patients, as they allow for reduced healing time and less complications.

During the June 25 event, crowds of people lined up for their chance to test out the robot and a representative for Intuitive, the company behind the device, was on hand to answer all their questions.
